Autumn Term 2025

Maths
This term in Maths, we will begin by revisiting the four operations, consolidating and learning new methods to tackle more challenging calculations. There will be a strong emphasis on developing mental arithmetic and problem-solving skills. Children are expected to continue practising their times tables to recall facts rapidly and confidently. Additional areas of study include fractions, shape, data handling, patterns, and sequences. The focus will be on embedding these skills to achieve mastery.

English
In English, we will use texts linked to our topics to create meaningful cross-curricular connections. Children will practise a variety of writing styles for different purposes and audiences. Reading comprehension, particularly inference, will remain a key focus. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be reinforced in lessons, with attention to rules and patterns to help children confidently use ambitious vocabulary in their independent writing.

Science
This term, children will investigate materials and how they change. We will begin by exploring the properties of various materials, then study dissolving, solutions, and evaporation. Pupils will compare reversible and irreversible changes, conducting experiments to explore what affects the speed of dissolving and evaporation, and investigating ways to reverse certain processes.

Topic
History: Lessons will focus on the Victorians, beginning with a timeline to understand the chronology of the period. Children will examine primary and secondary sources to learn about 19th-century Britain and explore the growth of the British Empire during Queen Victoria’s reign.
Geography: Pupils will study Peterborough, examining both human and physical features of the local area.

RE
Our Religious Education focus will begin with Buddhism, exploring core beliefs and how followers use their faith to guide daily life. Key concepts include karma, rebirth, and enlightenment. Pupils will also investigate the significance of prayer across various faiths, including how, where, and why people pray, and how it supports them.

PSHE
Lessons will explore peer pressure, considering both positive and negative influences and the importance of resisting harmful pressures. We will also study the effects of smoking, including health implications and the legal rules surrounding its use.

Art
Art lessons will link to our Victorian topic. Pupils will study the work of William Morris, focusing on his repeated patterns and floral designs, before creating their own pieces inspired by his love of the natural world.

PE
In Physical Education, children will develop basketball skills, practising individual techniques and improving teamwork through communication and tactics. Fitness will be enhanced through a variety of activities. Year 5 will also participate in swimming lessons and a dance unit, creating both individual and group routines.

DT
In Design Technology, pupils will explore Great British dishes, learning about traditional foods from England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as international influences on British cuisine. Children will practise essential life skills such as planning and shopping for a meal.

Computing
We will begin with a refresher on e-safety, then study computer systems and networks, including how to search effectively for information. Pupils will progress to creating their own media, focusing on video production.

Music
This term, Year 5 will study “Programme Music,” which tells a story or creates an image through sound. Pupils will compose pieces representing animals, perform group arrangements, and listen to orchestral works such as Peter and the Wolf, The Planet Suite, and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

French
Pupils will expand their French vocabulary, starting with playground-related words, before learning the names of various animals, including pets. Opportunities will be provided to hold simple conversations based on these topics
