Year 3

Theme – Viking/Saxons

Unit- SOUNDS Musical focus: Exploring sounds- Subject link: Geography

This unit explores how instruments can be classified according to the sounds they produce. Music from around the world introduces the children to different timbres and structures as they create musical conversations. The children will also learn the song ‘Viking Rock’

Unit- IN THE PAST Musical focus: Pitch- Subject link: PE

In this unit the origins of pitch notations are introduced as the children make hand signals and compose three-note melodies. They learn basic dance steps and prepare a performance.

Year 4

Theme – Viking/Saxons

Unit- SOUNDS Musical focus: Exploring sounds - Subject link: Science

This unit looks at the way sounds are produced and classified. The children use their voices to make beatbox sounds, learn to sing four-part songs and perform a jazzy round. The children will also learn the song ‘Viking Rock’

Unit- IN THE PAST Musical focus: Notation - Subject link: PE

In this unit the children use a variety if notations to build performances from different periods and styles. They learn a Renaissance dance, walk down the aisle to Wagner’s Bridal March and dance the mashed potato!

Unit- KEEPING HEALTHY Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: PE

From body-popping and gospel-singing skeletons to swimming and cycling, the children are taken through their paces in this unit, and put together a performance using new musical techniques.

Unit- WONDERFUL WATERWORKS / RIVER’S TALE Musical focus: Composition - Subject link: English

The children will learn the songs Wonderful Waterworks and the River’s Tale and their pitched and unpitched percussion parts. Using the LCP scheme they will explore the river’s journey from its source to the sea and create their own music in groups and graphic scores.

Year 6

Theme-Water

Unit- JOURNEYS Musical focus: Song cycle performance Subject link: PSHE

This unit focuses on songs that can be sung in different combinations. The theme of challenging journeys in life resonates through this selection of songs and thoughts of change and transition and binds them in an optimistic and uplifting song-cycle performance.
