A guide to subject progression

Our school works with TT Education, School Improvement Provider of the Year.

The skills and vocabulary progression guides from TT Education support teachers with an additional support for each subject area, highlighting key skills and vocabulary. Written by current practitioners, for current practitioners, the documents are fully aligned with the objectives and expectations of the Primary National Curriculum and the EYFS Framework.

Each subject document contains age-appropriate skills, vocabulary, cross curricular opportunities, knowledge and understanding for each year group. They contain direct references to the National Curriculum and Early Years guidance documentation. They are used as an additional support in planning whole class/group learning in addition to supporting our curriculum vision and planning with the delivery and progression of skills, as well as teacher assessment judgements.

Curriculum Intent

Hampton Hargate Primary School’s inclusive curriculum puts children at the centre of their learning and fosters the development of inquisitive and well-informed pupils who are able to think for themselves. Positive, supportive and cooperative relationships, based on mutual trust and respect, are at the heart of what we do and the ethos of school life.

Our curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the Primary National Curriculum and ensures each child’s ambitious learning journey starts from day one in Reception, through to the end of Year 6. We strive to create a whole school atmosphere which has high aspirations for all, values resilience, celebrates success and places importance on the learning process as well as the learning outcomes. Our Early Years curriculum is shaped by the four guiding principles: the unique child, positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and development. Through child-initiated play and well planned and structured activities we make sure children have rich experiences to achieve the Early Learning GoalsDevelopmental Matters, alongside the Characteristics of Effective Learning, are used to support our curriculum.

Our curriculum design goes beyond the experiences provided in the classroom to ensure that all of our pupils receive the richest and most varied opportunities. We aim to inspire and excite our pupils to achieve excellence and motivate them to succeed. We offer a variety of enrichment opportunities to ignite a love of learning through visits, visitors and WOW days.

Our curriculum is designed to allow our children to:

  • be confident, happy, independent resilient learners
  • receive consistent, high quality, child-centred teaching and learning
  • demonstrate and enjoy a thirst for learning
  • be kind, supportive, show empathy and compassion whilst valuing diversity
  • achieve and progress academically across the entire curriculum, aiming to meet at least the national expectation at the end of KS2
  • be culturally knowledgeable about our country and our world, how they connect to the past, live in the present and look forward to the future
  • have high aspirations for the future, knowing these can be reached through hard work, positive attitude, enthusiasm and determination
  • be well prepared for the challenges and expectations of the secondary school curriculum and lifelong learning
  • to be equipped with skills to lead a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally and socially.

Ultimately, we want all pupils at Hampton Hargate Primary School to achieve their full potential, make a positive contribution to the world they live in and have the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.

Curriculum Implementation

Our pupils are expected to work hard, respond positively to challenge and demonstrate positive learning behaviours across the curriculum. We have high expectations of attendance, academic achievement, pupil behaviour and collaborative learning. Our school is committed to working in close partnership with parents and carers as we believe that this promotes and provides the best outcomes for our pupils.

Across the curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on well-being, positive self-awareness, relationships and the wider world. Our curriculum design will develop each pupil’s ability to question, think critically and discuss with confidence in all subjects. We recognise the importance of pupils’ physical and mental well-being in shaping their long-term lifestyle choices. The curriculum design enables pupils to have access to a wide range of opportunities which promote personal safety, enrichment and pupil voice with all children being actively involved in whole school decision making.

Reading across all curriculum areas is a priority to extend and deepen pupils understanding and use of vocabulary. We want pupils to develop a love of reading and be exposed to a wide range of literature in order to stimulate a sense of natural curiosity. Each subject is well resourced to meet the needs of all learners and to ensure all pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum. We monitor and evaluate our teaching and learning to continue to raise expectations and ensure the highest outcomes for our pupils.

In order to raise aspirations, confidence and self-belief, it is imperative that we prioritise experiential learning within our curriculum. We regularly plan ‘WOW Days’ into our curriculum, involving visitors and special events in school as well as visits and experiences out of school to further enrich their learning. Educational and residential visits are carefully chosen to deepen pupil knowledge, and we make the most of our outdoor learning environment to enhance hands-on learning experiences.

Continuing Professional Development for all staff is a priority to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver the highest standards across our curriculum. Music and sports specialists work alongside teaching staff to enhance curriculum delivery. Subject Leaders have the necessary expertise to play a pivotal role in both the design and delivery of their subject area, ensuring a clear progression of both skills and knowledge across all year groups, underpinned by a robust assessment system. They can confidently articulate how learning is re-visited and developed year-on-year, to ensure a rich learning journey from Reception to Year 6.
