Year 5
Summer Term 2026
We are looking forward to a busy and engaging summer term in Year 5, with a rich curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and support every child’s progress.
Literacy
This term, we will continue to develop reading comprehension and grammar skills, alongside placing a strong emphasis on independent writing. Using a range of high-quality texts, including Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, pupils will explore and practise a variety of writing styles such as non-chronological reports, explanation texts, instructional writing, and narratives. Weekly spelling sessions will support children in developing effective strategies to confidently spell more challenging words.
Mathematics
In Maths, we will maintain a balanced focus on arithmetic, problem-solving, and applying calculations. As part of preparing for Year 6, children will continue to develop efficient, accurate methods of calculation. They will consolidate their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages, while also learning a range of strategies to tackle reasoning questions. Ongoing work on times tables will further strengthen fluency and confidence.
Science
Our Science learning begins with a fascinating exploration of Earth and Space. Children will study the solar system, including the size, position, and movement of the planets. They will investigate the Earth’s shape and how its rotation and orbit lead to day and night, as well as seasonal changes in daylight. Later in the term, we will explore Animals, including Humans, focusing on growth and development from infancy through childhood.
Topic (History & Geography)
In History, we will delve into Ancient Civilisations, with a particular focus on the Ancient Greeks. Pupils will compare aspects of ancient life with modern-day living, while developing research and independent learning skills.
After half term, our Geography unit will focus on water. Children will study rivers, flooding, and the impact of pollution on the environment and living things.
Music
This term, pupils will explore Gamelan, the traditional music of Indonesia. They will learn about its cultural significance, listen to and analyse musical structures, and perform pieces using glockenspiels. Working collaboratively, children will develop their ensemble skills and compose their own pieces inspired by the Gamelan style.
Religious Education (RE)
Our RE focus is Islam. Pupils will explore the relationship between the faith and the natural world, including discussions around climate change and environmental responsibility. They will consider how Muslim communities respond to these challenges and why caring for the Earth is important within Islam. Later, we will explore the role of art in religion.
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)
This term’s topic is Growing and Changing. Children will learn about how their bodies develop over time and begin to understand the changes they may experience in the coming years in a supportive and age-appropriate way.
Art
Linking to our Ancient Worlds topic, pupils will study Greek art and architecture, including the styles of Greek columns. They will develop drawing techniques, focusing on tonal shading, and create artwork inspired by Greek vases. Later in the term, children will explore the work of Frida Kahlo, using oil pastels to produce their own expressive pieces.
Physical Education (PE)
In PE, we will focus on developing hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and game skills through activities such as handball and rounders. Pupils will also take part in athletics and outdoor adventurous activities. We are hopeful that we will be able to enjoy Sports Day together later in the term.
Design and Technology (DT)
Children will design and make their own mobile phone cases, considering both appearance and functionality. They will build on their previous sewing skills, using techniques such as running stitch, back stitch, and blanket stitch.
Computing
Our Computing lessons will begin with a focus on e-safety, helping children understand how to stay safe online. Pupils will then develop coding skills by creating their own interactive quizzes, before moving on to video editing, where they will plan and produce short films.
Modern Foreign Languages (French)
Children will continue to build their confidence in French, practising the alphabet and responding to simple questions. They will expand their vocabulary and begin to use adjectives to describe everyday objects.
