Year 3

Theme – Stone Age, class person

Unit- SOUNDS Musical focus: Exploring sounds- Subject link: Geography

This unit explores how instruments can be classified according to the sounds they produce. Music from around the world introduces the children to different timbres and structures as they create musical conversations.

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: DT

The sights and sounds of a building site provide the inspiration for exploring and creating rhythms in this unit. The children play games, sing and compose music to build into a performance.

Unit- SOUNDS Musical focus: Exploring sounds - Subject link: Science

This unit looks at the way sounds are produced and classified. The children use their voices to make beatbox sounds, learn to sing four-part songs and perform a jazzy round.

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: PSHE

In this unit building themed songs allow the children to explore different music textures. The children use layers and rondo structure to combine ostinato using body percussion and tuned instruments.

Theme-Egypt

Unit- KEEPING HEALTHY Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: PE

From body-popping and gospel-singing skeletons to swimming and cycling, the children are taken through their paces in this unit, and put together a performance using new musical techniques. The children will also learn the song ‘Amazing Egyptians’ and songs from Charanga.

Unit- AT THE MOVIES Musical focus: Composition - Subject link: English

The children explore movie music in this unit- from 1920s animated films to present day movies. They learn techniques for creating soundtracks and film scores, and compose their own movie music.

The children in year 5 will also learn to play the ocarina in music lessons this year.

Year 6

Theme-Egypt

Unit- JOURNEYS Musical focus: Song cycle performance Subject link: PSHE

This unit focuses on songs that can be sung in different combinations. The theme of challenging journeys in life resonates through this selection of songs and thoughts of change and transition and binds them in an optimistic and uplifting song-cycle performance. The children will also learn the song ‘Amazing Egyptians’ and songs from Charanga.

Unit- AT THE MOVIES Musical focus: Composition - Subject link: English (from age 9-10 ME book)

The children explore movie music in this unit- from 1920s animated films to present day movies. They learn techniques for creating soundtracks and film scores, and compose their own movie music.

The children in year 6 will also play the ocarina in music lessons this year.
