Year 3 - Theme- Rainforests/Fairtrade

Unit - Rainforests – Musical focus: – exploring sounds / composing (based on Old Music Express)

The children will explore how sounds can describe the moods stimulated by pictures. They will develop an understanding of how the sounds made on different musical instruments can be used expressively. They will create simple compositions to describe rainforest pictures.

Unit- FOOD AND DRINK Musical focus: Performance - Subject link: DT

A feast of chants, songs and performances. Composing word rhythms, singing a round and creating musical recipes will develop the children’s skills from breakfast through to dinner time!

Unit- HUMAN BODY Musical focus: Structure- Subject link: Science

Skeleton dances and songs teach the children about the human body in this unit. Percussion instruments are used to improvise, create word rhythms and build a final skeleton dance.

Year 4 - Theme- Rainforests/Fairtrade

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: PSHE

In this unit building themed songs allow the children to explore different music textures. The children use layers and rondo structure to combine ostinato using body percussion and tuned instruments.

The children cook up a musical feat in this unit. They enjoy a varied diet of healthy beans, exotic Tudor banquets and DIY pizzas before celebrating in a song performance.

Year 5 - Theme – Extreme Earth / Natural Disasters

Unit-THERE’S A STORM COMING IN! Musical focus: performing and composing descriptive music (from Ten Pieces Plus)

The children will learn the song ‘There’s a storm coming in!’ which is inspired by the Storm Interlude from ‘Peter Grimes’ by Benjamin Britten. They will then develop an atmospheric storm piece.

Unit- LIFE CYCLES Musical focus: Structure- Subject link: PSHE

Explore the human life cycle in this unit with music from Brahms, Berio, Liszt and Monteverdi. The wide variety of musical moods, styles and genres inspires singing, performing and composing using new techniques and structures.

Year 6​​​​​​​ - Theme – Extreme Earth / Natural Disasters

Unit- MOVING ON Musical focus: Leavers’ assembly performance

 Subject link: Computing

In this unit, two songs- one looking back, one looking forward- and a musical device for linking them provide a moving celebration of the children’s happy memories and their hopes for the future.
