Year 3 Theme- Treasure island

Unit- ENVIRONMENT Musical focus: Composition- Subject link: Geography

Songs and poems about places are used to explore music in this unit. The children create accompaniments and sound pictures to reflect sounds in their local environment.

The children will also compose sounds for a ‘Treasure island’ story.

Unit- FOOD AND DRINK Musical focus: Performance - Subject link: DT

A feast of chants, songs and performances. Composing word rhythms, singing a round and creating musical recipes will develop the children’s skills from breakfast through to dinner time!

Unit- COMMUNICATION Musical focus: Composition- Subject link: Computing

In this unit, the children learn to make music inspired by technology and computing. They explore and compose sounds for earcons, emoticons, mobile phone ringtones, computer games and apps.

Unit- TIME Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: Mathematics (if time allows)

This unit develops the children’s understanding of beat, metre and rhythm. They combine melodic and rhythmic patterns and use staff notation as part of a final performance.

Year 4

Theme- Treasure Island

Unit- ENVIRONMENT Musical focus: Composition - Subject link: Science

Seasons and the environment provide the stimuli for compositions in this unit. The children make descriptive accompaniments and discover how the environment has inspired composers throughout history. The children will also compose sounds for a ‘Treasure island’ story.

Unit- COMMUNICATION Musical focus: Composition- Subject link: English

Children create a news programme in this unit, complete with theme music and school news headlines. Using songs and raps, this musical news bulletin will alert the school to the burning issues of the day!

Unit- TIME Musical focus: Beat- Subject link: Mathematics

Music featuring clocks helps the children to understand rhythm and syncopation in this unit. They learn to sing and play bell patterns, listen to an orchestral clock piece and create their own descriptive music.

Unit- RECYCLING Musical focus: Structure - Subject link: Art (if time allows)

This unit provides an opportunity for the children to be creative and make their own instruments from junk. They use these instruments to improvise, compose and play junk jazz music in a variety of different musical structures.

Year 5

Theme – Ancient Worlds

Unit - SONGWRITER - Exploring lyrics and melody (based on Old Music Express 6)

The children will learn a ‘scat’ song and invent alternative ostinati to accompany the song. They will explore lyrics and learn the song ‘Ode to the Ancient Greeks’. They will learn some simple musical features of the blues and explore blues improvisation. They will create their own lyrics for a blues song about the Greeks and perform it to the class.

The children may also do some composing work using garage band.

Unit- LIFE CYCLES Musical focus: Structure- Subject link: PSHE

Explore the human life cycle in this unit with music from Brahms, Berio, Liszt and Monteverdi. The wide variety of musical moods, styles and genres inspires singing, performing and composing using new techniques and structures.

Year 6

Theme – Ancient Worlds
