Unit- FOOD AND DRINK Musical focus: Performance - Subject link: DT

A feast of chants, songs and performances. Composing word rhythms, singing a round and                  creating musical recipes will develop the children’s skills from breakfast through to dinner time!

Unit- ENVIRONMENT Musical focus: Composition- Subject link: Geography

Songs and poems about places are used to explore music in this unit. The children                                    create accompaniments and sound pictures to reflect sounds in their local environment.

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: DT

The sights and sounds of a building site provide the inspiration for exploring and creating rhythms      in this unit. The children play games, sing and compose music to build into a performance.

Year 4

Unit- FOOD AND DRINK Musical focus: Performance - Subject link: DT

The children cook up a musical feat in this unit. They enjoy a varied diet of healthy beans, exotic            Tudor banquets and DIY pizzas before celebrating in a song performance.

Unit- ENVIRONMENT Musical focus: Composition - Subject link: Science

Seasons and the environment provide the stimuli for compositions in this unit. The children            make descriptive accompaniments and discover how the environment has inspired                          composers throughout history.

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: PSHE

In this unit building themed songs allow the children to explore different music textures. The          children use layers and rondo structure to combine ostinato using body percussion and                          tuned instruments.

Year 5

The children will learn to play the ocarina and compose their own piece using notation

Unit- OUR COMMUNITY Musical focus: Performance- Subject link: History

The song Jerusalem is the basis for looking at changes through time in this unit. The children are    given opportunities to compose and perform music inspired by their local community, past                and present. The children will also learn the song ‘Evacuate!’

Unit- CLASSROOM JAZZ 2 (from charanga scheme) Musical focus: improvisation/composition

The learning in this unit is focussed on two tunes- ‘Bacharach Anorak’ and ‘Meet the blues’.                      The children learn to play melodies from memory, improvise, compose and share their ideas.

Unit- GROWTH Musical focus: Street dance performance Subject link: Geography ‘The street’ is the setting for this unit of buskers and flash mobs. The children explore Ravel’s Bolero through rhythmical mime, learn songs with instrumental accompaniments and create a dance to build into a thrilling street performance.
