Year 3

Theme- Where are we in the world

Unit- ENVIRONMENT Musical focus: Composition- Subject link: Geography

Songs and poems about places are used to explore music in this unit. The children create accompaniments and sound pictures to reflect sounds in their local environment.

Unit- CHINA Musical focus: Pitch- Subject link: Mathematics

This unit explores the pentatonic scale through traditional Chinese music. The children explore different ways of notating pitch as they sing, read and compose music, ending with a musical celebration of Chinese New Year.

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: DT

The sights and sounds of a building site provide the inspiration for exploring and creating rhythms in this unit. The children play games, sing and compose music to build into a performance.

Year 4

Theme- Where are we in the world

Unit- ENVIRONMENT Musical focus: Composition - Subject link: Science

Seasons and the environment provide the stimuli for compositions in this unit. The children make descriptive accompaniments and discover how the environment has inspired composers throughout history.

Unit- AROUND THE WORLD Musical focus: Pitch - Subject link: Geography

In this unit the children explore pentatonic melodies and syncopated rhythms and learn that the fundamental dimensions of music are the same all over the world.

Unit- BUILDING Musical focus: Beat - Subject link: PSHE

In this unit building themed songs allow the children to explore different music textures. The children use layers and rondo structure to combine ostinato using body percussion and tuned instruments.

Year 5

Theme- Battle of Britain / WW2

The children will continue to practice their ocarinas and develop their understanding of musical notation.

Unit-VICTORY IN EUROPE Musical focus: performing rhythmic patterns (from Ten Pieces Plus) The children will learn the song ‘Victory in Europe’ which is based on 1st Movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and will add pitched and unpitched parts. They will learn about the Morse code and sing the song ‘Evacuate!’

Production or Unit- OUR COMMUNITY Musical focus: Performance- Subject link: History

The song Jerusalem is the basis for looking at changes through time in this unit. The children are given opportunities to compose and perform music inspired by their local community, past and present.

Year 6

Theme- Battle of Britain / WW2

Unit-MARS PUTS FEAR IN YOUR HEART! Musical focus: performing and composing (from Ten Pieces Plus)

The children will learn the song ‘Mars puts fear in your heart! which is based on Mars- the bringer of war from ‘The Planets’ by Gustav Holst and will add pitched and unpitched parts. They will compose their own version of ‘Mars’. If time permits they will device their own graphic score.
